Courses to Help You Learn and Master the English Language

No matter what your level of English proficiency is, at Bryan University, you have the opportunity to take ESL courses that are right for you. The courses are divided into three different levels and you will be placed in one of these three levels based on your performance on an ACCUPLACER test.

 
Students who score 270 or below on the ACCUPLACER test will be enrolled in ESL1. This basic mode of instruction is designed to teach students the following:

  • To understand general topics of the oral language when spoken at normal tempo on a subject dealing within the range of the text content.
  • To read and speak using the patterns of the English language when given a written selection within the student’s vocabulary range.
  • To be aware of significant features of different countries where English is spoken.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding of the American culture.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding of writing, reading, listening and speaking in the English language when used at normal tempo on a subject coinciding with the laboratory assignments. (Lab assignments will be based on Tell Me More software.)
  • To develop vocational English skills needed in a work environment.

In achieving these objectives students gain an understanding in:

Students who score between 271 and 364 on the ACCUPLACER test will be enrolled in ESL2. This intermediate course aims to teach students the following:

  • To understand oral language when spoken at normal tempo.
  • To read and to speak using the patterns of the English language appropriate to level.
  • To understand linguistic concepts such as the nature of the language and how to function through its structural system.
  • To be aware of significant features (geographical, economic, political, cultural) of the United States.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding of writing, reading, listening and speaking in the English language when used at normal tempo on a subject dealing within the range of content of the laboratory assignments. (All lab assignments will be based on Tell Me More software.)
  • To develop vocational English skills needed in a work environment.

In achieving these objectives students gain an understanding in:

Students who score between 364 and 450 on the ACCUPLACER test will be enrolled in ESL3. By the end of the course, the average student will be expected to:

  • Understand, read, write and speak English at the intermediate to advanced level of proficiency, which includes being able to have a regular conversation in English.
  • Be able to write paragraphs and short essays in English.
  • Be able to understand and speak in every setting of English.
  • Have acquired a higher level of appreciation and understanding of the culture of English speaking countries. (All lab assignments will be based on Tell Me More software.)
