Courses to Help You Learn and Master the English Language

No matter what your level of English proficiency is, at Bryan University, you have the opportunity to take ESL courses that are right for you. The courses are divided into three different levels and you will be placed in one of these three levels based on your performance on an ACCUPLACER test.

 
Students who score 270 or below on the ACCUPLACER test will be enrolled in ESL1. This basic mode of instruction is designed to teach students the following:

  • To understand general topics of the oral language when spoken at normal tempo on a subject dealing within the range of the text content.
  • To read and speak using the patterns of the English language when given a written selection within the student’s vocabulary range.
  • To be aware of significant features of different countries where English is spoken.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding of the American culture.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding of writing, reading, listening and speaking in the English language when used at normal tempo on a subject coinciding with the laboratory assignments. (Lab assignments will be based on Tell Me More software.)
  • To develop vocational English skills needed in a work environment.

In achieving these objectives students gain an understanding in:

  • Students can learn basic forms of English grammar including simple and progressive verb tenses, parts of speech, prepositions and an introduction to modals.
  • Students will practice these structures through communicative and functional activities and laboratory assignments.
  • This course will also focus on writing strategies. Emphasis will be on development of sentence structure and sentence variety to the paragraph level.
  • Students will also be introduced to the paragraph form, including expression of the main idea in topic sentences.
  • This course offers integrated skills with an emphasis on improving English proficiency and understanding of American culture.
  • It includes continued practice in listening, speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary building, grammar, reading, writing and learning strategies, and laboratory assignments.
  • Through listening comprehension and oral performances, students will practice their communication skills.
  • Students will learn to comprehend the main ideas in short passages and listen for specific detail, as well as engage in short conversations, report personal information and express opinions, and laboratory assignments.
  • This course will focus on reading strategies. Emphasis will be on vocabulary growth and comprehension and expression of the main idea.
  • Students will develop study and reading skills such as pre-reading and reading rate strategies, and laboratory assignments.
Students who score between 271 and 364 on the ACCUPLACER test will be enrolled in ESL2. This intermediate course aims to teach students the following:

  • To understand oral language when spoken at normal tempo.
  • To read and to speak using the patterns of the English language appropriate to level.
  • To understand linguistic concepts such as the nature of the language and how to function through its structural system.
  • To be aware of significant features (geographical, economic, political, cultural) of the United States.
  • To gain knowledge and understanding of writing, reading, listening and speaking in the English language when used at normal tempo on a subject dealing within the range of content of the laboratory assignments. (All lab assignments will be based on Tell Me More software.)
  • To develop vocational English skills needed in a work environment.

In achieving these objectives students gain an understanding in:

  • This course is intended to assist students in improving and practicing their spoken English and written grammar.
  • Students will study past, present and future verb tenses in the simple, progressive and perfect forms.
  • Students will also study gerunds and infinitives, phrasal verbs, comparatives, prepositions, modals, determiners, articles and agreement.
  • This course will integrate language skills with an emphasis on improving English proficiency and understanding of American culture.
  • It includes continued practice in listening, speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary building, grammar, reading, writing and learning strategies.
  • This course is intended to assist students in improving their communication skills.
  • Students will develop their listening and speaking skills through a variation of language activities and laboratory assignments.
  • This reading course will continue to strengthen basic skills of vocabulary development and comprehension with a variety of written material of gradually increasing difficulty.
  • The objective is to progress from mechanical to more meaningful reading and laboratory assignments.
  • This introductory composition course for second language students will focus on recognizing and practicing grammatical structures and sentence patterns within the familiar thematic context of shared personal and cultural experience, and laboratory assignments.
  • Pre-writing and revision strategies will be introduced.
Students who score between 364 and 450 on the ACCUPLACER test will be enrolled in ESL3. By the end of the course, the average student will be expected to:

  • Understand, read, write and speak English at the intermediate to advanced level of proficiency, which includes being able to have a regular conversation in English.
  • Be able to write paragraphs and short essays in English.
  • Be able to understand and speak in every setting of English.
  • Have acquired a higher level of appreciation and understanding of the culture of English speaking countries. (All lab assignments will be based on Tell Me More software.)

Students will work toward these objectives by undertaking the following program of study:

  • The purpose of this course is to support advanced academic writing by developing and refining the grammar and editing skills necessary to detect and remedy common ESL writing problems.
  • While the focus will be on accuracy, this course will also include logical analysis of the components of a composition and editing for improved clarity and effectiveness.
  • The student will practice strategies for speaking clear and appropriate English in a variety of academic situations.
  • Attention to fluency, pronunciation and intonation will also be emphasized.
  • This course includes a wide range of fictional and nonfictional reading. Emphasis is on the analysis and evaluation of both form and content as well as on pre-reading strategies and vocabulary development.
  • Study skills include note-taking, paraphrasing and summarizing.
  • A continuation of Intermediate English, this course reviews the paragraph as a component of the English essay.
  • Emphasis is on the planning, development and revision of multi-paragraph compositions.
  • Students will focus on particular problems with their writing and practice editing.
  • This course is designed to prepare students for reading college-level material effectively and efficiently.
  • Specific approaches to reading will be taught for both factual and fictional writing. Emphasis will be on the short story.
  • This course focuses on the process of writing; however, integral to the writing process are the skills of reading and listening actively and critically.
  • Collaboration and teamwork will be important components of this course. These skills enhance writing ability and contribute generally to success in both education and employment.
  • Students will be expected to read, research, discuss and work cooperatively as part of the composition process.
